How big is my baby?

At 10 weeks pregnant, this is the last week that your baby will be considered an embryo. As your baby’s legs continue to grow, they now start to curl underneath his or her body. With that said, your baby’s length from the top of it’s head to the bottom of it’s bottom is about 1 1/4 inches long.

Even at such a small size, your baby’s internal organs are starting to develop. On the outside, you will notice that your baby’s ears are nearly formed and your baby’s limbs are getting longer. For the first time, your baby’s weight can be measured and is typically around 1/4 of an ounce.

Was that a heartbeat?

Now that you are 10 weeks pregnant, you will have your first opportunity to hear your baby’s heartbeat. It’s a time that many parents-to-be look forward to and find very reassuring that their baby is okay.

First of all, remember how small your baby is right now, only 1 1/4 inches long. By contrast, your uterus is about the size of your fist, which leaves plenty of room for your baby to float around.

If your baby is only 1 1/4 inches long, it’s heart is much, much smaller and might still be difficult to pin down at this point. It is perfectly normal at this point to hear your baby’s heart beat fade in and fade out and that just means that your baby is moving around.

Also, do not be alarmed if your baby’s heartbeat is beating more quickly than what you may have originally expected it to be. While your heartbeat is typically between 60 and 80 beats per minute, your baby’s heartbeat is typically between 120 and 160 beats per minute. If you hear a much slower heart beat, it is most likely yours.

The take home message here – don’t worry too much if your are not able to consistently hear your baby’s heart beat or even if you can’t hear your baby’s heart beat at this point. Your doctor or midwife has several other ways of assessing your progress and the health of your baby. As your baby continues to grow, it will become easier to hear and calculate your baby’s heart rate.

But I don’t feel like I’m glowing

You may still be feeling pretty awful, but people around you may be saying things like “I knew that you were pregnant! I could tell because you have that mom-to-be glow!”

Truth be told, by 10 weeks pregnant, you’re probably glowing on the outside even if you don’t feel like you are glowing on the inside, and it’s perfectly normal and will get better in the second trimester.

What people are noticing is probably an increased rosiness in your cheeks and face. This is due to the overall increased blood flow that your body is experiencing now that you are pregnant.

In addition to this “glow” you may also be experiencing some acne. This too is perfectly normal and due to all of the pregnancy hormonal changes that your body is going through. While you might feel like you’re back in high school again, it’s just another perk of being pregnant.
